Definition, working principle and types of steam traps

 Friday, 15 December 2023

Steam Trap is a device used to remove condensed water and condensate in pipelines. It is mainly used in steam systems. It can automatically remove condensation water and prevent problems such as water hammer and uneven heating. The following will introduce in detail the definition, working principle and common types of traps.

The steam trap is a key piece of equipment used in steam systems. Its main function is to remove condensate and condensate from pipes. During the steam conduction process, a large amount of condensation water will be generated due to temperature changes and heat consumption. If not removed in time, condensed water will cause water hammer, pipe blockage, uneven heating and other problems.

Traps work based on the difference in density and thermal conductivity between liquid and vapor. Generally speaking, traps are installed at low points in pipes or where condensation is likely to accumulate. The specific working principle is as follows:

1. Condensate collection: The trap collects condensate into the valve body through a specially designed structure and sealing device. The collection chamber inside the trap gradually accumulates condensate while maintaining a certain liquid level.

2. Condensate water removal: When the condensate water accumulates to a certain level, the trap will open to drain the condensate water based on the liquid level change or the buoyancy principle of the float. The discharge method can be cut-throat type, float type, hydrophobic disc type, etc.

3. Steam seal: After the condensate is removed, the trap will automatically close to prevent steam leakage. This is because the steam has a higher pressure than the condensate. When the condensate is removed, the steam will close the valve.

Common trap types include cut-throat traps, float traps, disc traps, and temperature-regulated traps. Each type of trap is suitable for different steam systems and usage conditions based on different working principles and control methods.

Generally speaking, a steam trap is a device used to remove condensed water and condensate from a steam system. It accumulates and removes condensation water and maintains the normal working condition of the steam system. According to different working principles and system requirements, selecting the appropriate type and installation position of the steam trap can improve the efficiency and stability of the steam system.
